INPI enters into collaboration agreement with European agency to ease patents’ registration abroad.
Fernando Di Sabatino (Lawyer of Corporate Team)
A collaboration agreement was executed between the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property) and EPO (European Patent Office) aiming to encourage the registration of Brazilian patents at European market and vice versa. According to its provisions, the European agency will grant Brazilian companies with access to its modern recordation system, which allows queries to its database and electronic recordation of patents. This cooperation also provides users with an automatic English-to-Portuguese translation service, making the filing of required documents much easier.
INPI’s president Mr. Jorge Avila estimates that the international registration of patents will be even greater than the 8.9% recorded in 2011, after the execution of the agreement. According to Avila, Brazil has a great creative potential, but it still provides its products with weak protection in overseas markets. The partnership between Brazil and Europe regarding the registration of patents is longstanding. The current registration system itself owes much of its effectiveness to the technical contribution of the EPO.
